Why is my mobile number added to NPCI’s database?

As per NPCI’s new guideline, we had to add your PhonePe registered mobile number (UPI number) to NPCI’s database and link it to a UPI ID (VPA). This allows you to receive payments made using just your UPI number (PhonePe registered number) from any other payment app, irrespective of whether you’ve registered on that app.

For instance, if someone wishes to make a payment to you, but does not have a PhonePe account, they can use your UPI number on any other payment app to send you money. This amount will be credited to the account that was set as your primary bank account at the time your number was added to NPCI’s database.
