Payment Statuses

You can make payments to merchants, billers, and also add money to your PhonePe Wallet using your debit or credit card. Payments using debit and credit cards on PhonePe are quick and easy

Sometimes, however, payments may take longer than usual or may fail due to several reasons.

Here is all you to need to know about the different payment statuses:

Success

If you see this screen, it means that your debit or credit card payment is successfully completed

Your card-issuing bank has received your payment request
Your payment amount is debited
The merchant’s/biller’s bank has accepted your payment
The merchant’s/biller’s bank has deposited the amount into the merchant’s/biller’s bank account
Merchant/Biller will process your request

Note: In case of payments to merchants/billers/service providers, processing of your request will be done by the respective merchant or biller as per their defined timelines. Learn more about payments to merchants/billers/service providers.

Pending

If you see this screen, it means that your debit or credit card payment is stuck due to some technical difficulties either at your card-issuing bank’s end or the merchant’s or biller’s banks’ end.

Your card-issuing bank has received your payment request
Your payment amount is debited
The merchant’s/biller’s bank has accepted your payment
The merchant’s/biller’s bank has deposited the amount into the merchant’s/biller’s bank account
Merchant/biller will process your request

It may take anywhere between 5 mins to 2 days for the merchant/biller to update the final status of your pending payment. This is completely dependent on the merchant/biller.

Sometimes, your payment amount may get debited from your card-issuing bank account. Please note that your money is always safe with the bank

Once the final status is updated, you payment will be marked:
Successful - Your amount will reach the merchant’s/biller’s account, and your request will be processed.
Failed - You can make the payment again. If your amount is debited, your money will be refunded to your card-issuing bank account. Learn more about refunds.

Failed

If you see this screen, it means that your debit or credit card payment has failed.

Some of the most common reasons for failure are:
Wrong card details
Technical issues at your card-issuing bank, or merchant’s/biller’s bank
Network issues
Bank daily payment limits
Security reasons
Other bank-related issues

When a debit or credit card payment fails, your money may or may not get debited depending on the reason for failure. If your money is debited, please be sure that it is absolutely safe with your bank, and will be refunded into your account.
